Gard, Languedoc Roussillon |
The Gard is named from the River Gardon which flows from the Cevennes National Park across to the River Rhone. The ancient province has been well known for its remarkable wines from Roman times. Within easy reach are the medieval historic monuments of Avignon, Uzes, Beaucaire and Saint-Gilles, fortified Aigues-Mortes beside the sea and the Roman remains in Nimes, Arles and the aqueduct Pont du Gard. Nearby is the Mas de Soubeyran showcasing the Huguenot struggles in the area, the oriental gardens of La Bambouserie, the Grotte de Trabuc with its impressive cave system and the silk museum at St Hippolyte du Fort. The pretty local towns of Anduze and St Jean du Gard have excellent markets as does Uzes and the region is well known for wonderful walking in the hills (Travels with a Donkey) and the many rivers offer canoing and kayaking.
The property is stretched out along a rocky ridge in the heart of the hamlet but through the arched double front door is a private world - a spacious stone house with original beams over three floors, two converted magnaneries and a shady 15m terrace facing west, perfect for relaxed dining. The lovely view is down over the mature terraced gardens to the pool with the ring of wooded hills above.
