Tangalle, Sri Lanka

Tangalle is in the very south of the fascinating island of Sri Lanka and is renowned for its exquisite beaches. This villa is situated in the village of Seenimodera, some 5km from Tangalle, in a particularly sought-after area (the Amanwella hotel is next door).

The House:

was completed in December 2004 and is constructed entirely of teak, one of Sri Lanka’s sustainable hardwoods. Set upon one and a half acres of coconut plantation on a hill above the beach, it has been designed to benefit from the wonderful breezes that come off the Indian Ocean. A lovely garden has been created around the house, including 40 odd flowering ginger plants directly in front of it. Coconuts are plucked every two months – do ask Roshan to bring you a fresh coconut as and when you like!

The beach is maybe a minute’s stroll beneath the property. Just around a woody headland you will find Mahawella beach, one of the most celebrated beaches in the region (CN Traveller).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be prepared by Roshan, the House Manager, who has become an accomplished cook. He will go to the market to buy fresh fruit, bread and even buffalo curd (the local yoghurt). Lunch and dinner are at your discretion – eat in or out. Roshan will cook for you or purchase and prepare the ingredients you require from the local fishermen and fruit and vegetable market.

The house can sleep 4 adults, or 6 using the extra beds available:

Access and location:

Tangalle is a drive of just under 100 miles from Colombo International Airport in the very south of Sri Lanka. Transport can be provided.

The owners say:

“You might be in another world at The Teak House. Far removed from the sometimes troubled North and East of the island, Tangalle boasts some of the most unspoilt tropical beaches in Asia. Relax, recharge and fall asleep to the unceasing rhythm of the Indian Ocean below.”
